During the last few decades, Skokie received the largest number of new immigrants and refugees of any community in the Chicago metropolitan area. The countries of birth most heavily represented in Skokie are: Former Soviet Union (Russia & Ukraine) 13.4% India 11.3% Philippines 10.2% Korea 8.5% Iraq 6.1% In keeping with our mission of serving the needs of all Skokie residents, Skokie Public Library is developing online resources, programming, and services for these Americans. New Immigrants Information Center is an innovative multilingual Internet website, developed by Skokie Public Library reference librarians. Our goal is to provide helpful information for recent immigrants in Skokie, as well as the Internet community at large.

The Library has a large number of books and audiovisual materials for those learning English as a second language and for adults learning to read. The collection includes textbooks, citizenship guides, TOEFL study guides, and much more. All of the materials may be checked out of the Library. Questions about the collection should be directed to the Reference desk.

The Skokie Public Library provide a space for free ESL classes tree times per week.
