proposed skokie lib exhibit on local government
From: David A. Solovy: What a great idea --to have a exhibit on local gov at Skokie Pub Library. Citizens and especially students(Niles Township H.s. District 219) need to experience the importance of local gov. It effects everyday day in our community. Skokie Gov/Niles Township Gov/Cook County Gov-they all are important to the citizens. Indeed, they are all inter-connected and work together to help the citizens. An excellent example is the recent flooding problems and other local disasters in our community. From Skokie 's flood control stystem to the Niles Township Food Bank--all citizens are helped. Unfortunately, our students at Niles Township H.S. are not taught about local gov. It is only required that the U.S. constitution and the Ill. constitution are taught-Public Law Test
Our students need to have local gov education to be included in the curriculum at Niles Township H.S.. Also , our students must become aware of the opportunities to "volunteer" in the community gov. Skokie gov. Niles Township gov and Cook County offer our students opportunites to serve the community by volunteer(example: Food Pantry at Niles Township) and internship programs in the various gov offices.
Returning to Niles Township 219. As a retired sp. ed and social studies teacher in District 219 I suggest that the social studies teachers use enrichment activities to introduce students to the local gov. For example, interview the Mayor of skokie/ village manager/members of the Zoning Bd. of Appeals/ interview the Trustees of Niles Township/the assessor of Niles Township.
Attend meeting of the Skokie Zoning Bd. of Appeals/ the Skokie Village Bd. Meetings and write reports on these gov. activities for class assignments. I have contacted Skokie gov/Niles Township Gov/ and Cook County Gov--they like these ideas and have offered to help our students with curriculum projects/ interviews/attend meetings. They have offered to attend Niles Township and serve as guest speakers and also organize a local gov program.
Again, please support the local gov exhibit at the Skokie Public Lib and a big Thank You to Frances Roehm (Librarian) for helping with this project.
