Skokie Among The First 100 Illinois Towns Ready To Be "Safe Haven" to Abandoned Babies

Congratulations to Skokie public officials!

The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation has announced that the Village of Skokie is among the first 100 Illinois towns to comply with a law passed in August 2007 that required hospitals, fire and police stations and sheriff offices to post "safe haven" signs prominently on their exteriors.

The signs signal to parents who cannot care for a newborn where they can anonymously relinquish the baby to a government agency without fear of prosecution for abandonment. The law is intended to give parents in a crisis a safe, legal, confidential and aonymous way relinquish unwanted babies during their first days alive.

In Skokie, signs indicating "safe havens'' are located outside:

* Skokie Police Department at 8350 Laramie Ave

* Skokie Fire Department Headquarters/Station 16, 7424 Niles Center Road

* Skokie Fire Station 17, 8157 Central Park Avenue

* Skokie Fire Station 18, 9024 Gross Point Road and

* Rush North Shore Medical Center, 9600 Gross Point Road.
