Lincolnwood Pack 74 Cub Scouts visit local Nursing Home

On Sunday afternoon, December 7th from 2:00– 4:00 PM Lincolnwood’s Cub Scout Pack 74 will visit Chicago’s Buckingham Pavilion Nursing Center in West Roger’s Park. Buckingham Pavilion Nursing Center is a privately owned award winning care facility. At Buckingham Pavilion, the Cub Scouts hope to bring good old-fashioned fun and cheer to the center. The Cub Scouts plan on beginning their visit with a small tour of the facilities where they will learn about the functions and operations of the center. After their tour, they will proceed to the center’s main activity room where they will run a Bingo game for the residents. The scouts will have a chance to call out the Bingo numbers and assist the residents in monitoring their playing cards. Prizes, made by the Cub Scouts will be awarded to the winners of the Bingo games. Following the Bingo games the scouts will relocate to the center’s small auditorium. There the Cub Scouts will take the stage to perform various skits, songs and musical acts for the enjoyment of the residents. The performing Cub Scouts are 1st – 5th graders from Lincolnwood and range in ages from 7 to 11 years old. For the final part of the scouts visit, they will break into small groups where the residents will have the opportunity to share wonderful life experiences and stories with the scout youth. The Cub Scouts will also have a chance to share their stories with the residents. This is the first time the Lincolnwood Cub Scout Pack has visited a nursing care facility. If the visit is deemed successful it is likely that Cub Scout Pack 74 will make this part of their scouting activities in the future.

You're Invited To the "Third Annual Parol Making Workshop" At Skokie Public Library

Filipino 'parols'

Come help celebrate the Filipino tradition of making "parols" or Christmas lanterns, a custom that dates to the 1600s.

The 2008 Parol Workshop is a cultural project of Asian American Arts and Cultural Foundation (AAACF). The workshop will be led by Fred DeAsis (http://www.fdeasis.com/3.html), a respected Filipino American artist and Arlington Heights Arts Commissioner.

The workshop will be held Saturday, Nov. 15th, from 12:30 to 4:30pm, at the Mary Radmacher Room of the Skokie Public Library. The event is c free and will include a presentation of the significance of parol in the Filipino culture. There will also be a sing-along of Filipino Christmas carols.

Awards for best parols will also be awarded in three age groups: children 10 years and younger; children 11 to 17; and adults 18 and above.

Interfaith Service of Thanksgiving

All are invited to the 38th annual Interfaith Service of Thanksgiving on Wednesday November 26th at 7:30 PM. The community service this year will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church (8116 Niles Center Rd, Skokie) and is hosted by the Niles Township Clergy Forum. The Skokie Concert Choir offers special music as part of the service. A reception will follow. Those attending are invited to bring non-perishable food items for donation to the Niles Township Food Pantry. Cash donations will be directed to the Skokie Assist-a-Family program.

The American Library Association Announces 'Wiki' Page To Help Veterans Find Benefits' Information

The American Library Association (ALA) has unveiled a new database for veterans and their families to help access information on government benefits available to them. The new "wiki" can be accessed at

The new resource is a tool to locate various types of veteran’s information.

ALA's Office of Government Relations (OGR) is working on the effort with the American Legion National Headquarters, the American Council on Education, the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools, and the National Military Family Association.
